Special Effects Artistry
Learn your fundamentals. You will learn the A-Zs of introductory Special Effects Artistry from skin prep for SFX, wounds, prosthetic application, burns, character creation and much more. After completing either Online Special Effects Artistry (OSFX) or In-Person Special Effects Artistry (SFXH), you’ll have the option to take your skills to the next level with our portfolio-building: Elite Special Effects Artistry (ESFX).

There is no difference in curriculum between the two.
Online Special Effects Artistry is a self-paced course designed for flexibility. Learn at your own pace through video demonstrations, an eBook, quizzes, and homework assignments — all accessible through your student portal. You’ll receive direct support, reviews, and feedback from our professional instructors. This is a great option for non-local students or those who need more time to complete their training.
In-Person Special Effects Artistry is held at our Academy in Hollywood. This is a private, one-on-one course between the student and a professional MVA instructor. The program typically runs for 4–5 consecutive days, depending on the student’s schedule. It’s an excellent choice for students who prefer hands-on, personalized instruction in a professional studio environment.
Elite Special Effects Artistry (ESFX) is 6 weeks once a week in person portfolio Building!

Portfolio Building Galore:
Elite Special Effects Artistry
It’s time to build your portfolio and get hands-on in the studio. Elite Special Effects Artistry builds on the fundamentals you’ve learned and takes your skills to the next level. Elite is in-person at MVA. Class is once a week for 4 weeks. Each week focuses on a specific special effects look/technique.
Students apply the look on a professional model, who is then styled and professionally photographed in our studio. This one-of-a-kind customized course selections—only at MVA—gives students invaluable hands-on experience and builds a strong portfolio. MVA provides everything needed for the shoot, including a professional model, stylist, photographer, and access to our state-of-the-art soundstage studios.
ESFX teaches you new and advanced techniques that you did not cover in Fundamentals via hands-on learning. Each week you’ll create a special effects makeup look using your Fundamentals theory and take it to the next level using new techniques taught only in ESFX. After completing the look it will be taken to the studio to be professionally styled and photographed. Here are the looks you will complete:
- Bruises, cuts, and scrapes
- Prosthetics
- Burns
- Bald Cap
- Aging
- Finals: Create your own character and do a full SFX makeup look
